MERA Blue Jeans Classical Music Series
The Blue Jeans Classical Music series is a showcase for professional classical musicians to come and share their music and musical passions with MERA audiences.
Over the past five years, we have hosted over 20 concerts. As Dean Hall is an intimate space with excellent acoustics, it is a rare opportunity to be very close to professional musicians as they display their talent and knowledge. We encourage the musicians to talk about their careers, instruments and the musical pieces they have chosen to present. Most concerts are held on Sunday afternoons, typically from 2:00 - 4:00 pm as it seems to be the time when more musicians are free of their regular commitments. The Wizards’ Cafe is open before and at the break in the concert, offering a range of hot and cold drinks, and tasty treats. All concerts will be announced through the MERA Website, Newsletter, Facebook page and our Events Calendar with a musical biography of the players and sometimes the list of pieces to be presented. MERA has worked hard to keep the prices very reasonable and to facilitate the enjoyment of classical music right here in Lanark County. To encourage the next generation of musicians, youths under the age of 16 are admitted free of charge.
Máire Ní Chathasaigh & Chris Newman play to capacity audience May 2nd
MERA was thrilled to present a sold out concert featuring Máire Ní Chathasaigh on the harp and Chris Newman, guitar, on Wednesday, May 2nd at 7:00 PM. The Irish Times proclaimed them “the finest Celtic duo in the world.” The virtuoso partnership of England’s premier flat-picking guitarist and “the greatest Celtic harper of our age” (LIVE IRELAND) has by now brought its unique musical vision to twenty-two countries on five continents. Chris and Máire have performed at over 175 folk, Celtic, arts, harp and guitar festivals in Europe, the USA and Australasia and have given almost two thousand concerts in venues large and small - from the tiniest of historic churches in England, Germany and Italy to palaces in Kyoto and Istanbul, London’s Barbican, Sydney’s Town Hall and the Philharmonie in Cologne.
Trio Corventano delights Chamber Music lovers May 20
A near capacity audience were delighted as flutist Dakota Martin, cellist Thomas Beard and pianist Phillip Chiu presented a varied program of works, from the early classical trio offerings of Joseph Haydn to the jazz-inspired pieces by Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin. In keeping with the informal theme of the Blue Jeans Series the trio introduced each piece with interesting and often humourous descriptions of the composer, the social and musical context and the structure of the music. Together, these three exceptionally talented musicians brought their passion and delight in the music to a most receptive
audience. We are hoping they can return to MERA in the not too distant future.
Tickets are for $25 plus service fee available in advance from Ticketsplease either online at Tickets Please , by telephone at 613-485-6434 or in person at the Matheson House Museum in Perth.
