A Special Sewing Workshop

10:00 am - 2:30 pm

This year's recipient of the MERA Award of Excellence in Fine Arts and Fine Crafts, Bridget O'Flaherty for her outstanding Thread Painted Art, is holding a sewing workshop at MERA.

Cost: $60 for MERA members, $75 for non-members. Payment is due upon registration and will secure your spot in the workshop.  Cancellations within two weeks of the workshop date cannot be refunded.

Here are the workshop details:

Beginner Thread Painting

Have you always wanted to try thread painting but didn't think you were skilled enough at sewing or artistic? This class gives you easy step-by-step instructions on how to tackle the basics. You will also get a chance to create patterns through thread painting by numbers, a simple easy to read pattern that takes the guess work out of drawing, colour theory and shading. 

You will need the following:

Thread: 13 spools of regular weight sewing thread



Light grey


Med brown

Dark Brown

Med green

Light purple

Med purple

Mustard yellow

Three shades of red-light, medium, dark (should tone together)

Basic sewing supplies:

Marking pen, snipping scissors, stitch ripper, 6-8” hoop (wooden ones with the screw will work, but compression hoops are ideal)

Bring your sewing machine in good working order capable of free motion or darning (embroidery foot) & manual for the machine if possible

Patterns will be included.

About Bridget O'Flaherty

Bridget O’Flaherty has 26 years of experience in the quilting and fibre art industry. She has taught and lectured about her art at conferences and associations nationally. Her work is in private and public collections including the University of Alberta Art Collection, Edmonton, Alberta. She has works hanging in the Town Halls of Perth Ontario, Perth Scotland and Osaka Japan.

Bridget has always been drawn to pictorial, landscape Art Quilts. She explores the blend of contemporary fibre art techniques with the traditions of quilting. She utilizes layers of thread for shading effects. Much like pencil crayon or pen and ink, she uses stitching techniques with traditional piecing of fabric and quilting techniques to convey her landscape art.  Her current work explores the use of organic materials and natural, hand dyed, fabrics. Her art quilts are inspired by nature and biodiversity.
