MERA Summer Arts Camp for Kids

MERA has been hosting an Arts Camp for 7 to 14 year olds for 15 years now and this year the camp will run from Monday July 23 to Friday July 27, 9:00am to 3:00pm each day.

The MERA Summer Arts Camp 2018 is an exciting week filled with creativity, exploration of natural materials and various art forms. There will be time for physical activity outside with emphasis on team building. This year we will also have a few spaces for younger children (ages 4 to 7). Please contact the coordinator though MERA to discuss whether the program would be suitable for your younger child.

Arts Camp 2018 will be lead by a mother and daughter duo with a flair for creativity and fun. Jan Griffiths and Heather Vriends have many years of experience teaching art to children. " Our goal is to foster an appreciation for materials found in nature and to create inspirational art projects. Our focus will be on what resources we find in our environment as well as a conscientious approach to reusing and re-purposing supplies. We encourage each child's uniqueness and sense of curiosity."

A quick glimpse at some of the projects we want to explore are:
1) working with clay to make masks
- a comprehensive appreciation for modelling with clay, glazing and kiln firing
2) weaving with natural materials
- making large looms outside and discovering all the possibilities of 'found' materials in our environment
3) making paint and paint brushes
- discovering the art of taking natural materials to make paint (plants, rocks, seeds, vegetation, etc.)
- searching for materials that can be used to make various types of paint brushes and applicators
- using the supplies, we made to create a painting on watercolour paper
4) needle felting
- using wool roving and needles to create a project of choice such as an animal, bird, doll, etc.
5) paper making
-making paper by combining recycled scrap paper, organic materials, pressed flowers and herbs to create cards

That, in a nut shell, is what the children attending MERA Arts Camp 2018 have to look forward to. Both Jan and Heather are looking forward to meeting and working with the children who are registered for MERA Arts Camp 2018. See you there!
