SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Terra Spenser
DESCRIPTION:A very first impression of Terra Spencer’s music is one of comfortable melody sung confidently\, accompanied by deft fingerstyle guitar or piano. But after the first verse you are wishing you paid more attention. There are stories unfolding here in this music. Terra has been playing instruments from a young age\, but her music career is barely a decade old. This follows a stint as a small town funeral director\, an occupation with a unique window into a community of stories. Wherever her stories come from\, the styles and subjects of Terra’s compositions cast a surprisingly wide net\, quirky\, poignant\, observant\, fascinating. On stage Terra brings easy gentle humor and spontaneous conversation that connects her music together to create a thoughtful\, intimate show. \nThe caliber of Terra’s songwriting has attracted collaborations with such musicians as David Gunning\, David Francey and Ben Caplan. Each of Terra’s 4 strong albums have added to her growing reputation as a quality musician and songwriter. Terra’s latest album ‘Sunset’ was named the 2024 Penguin Eggs Roots Music Canada Critics’ Choice Album of the Year (alongside Julian Taylor’s ‘Pathways’) and Music Nova Scotia Folk/Roots Recording of the Year\, and garnered her ECMA and Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Solo Artist and English Songwriter of the Year. You may not have heard Terra Spencer before\, but once you do\, you will not soon forget her music. \nCLICK HERE for more information and video about Terra Spencer \nTickets are available at TicketsPlease.ca \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age. \nRegular – 31 years & older: $30 plus fees\nDiscount Single – 30 years & under: $10 plus fees\nDiscount Pair – 30 years & under with guest of any age (2 tickets): $20 plus fees \nFunding support provided by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Kellylee Evans
DESCRIPTION:It has been almost 20 years since Kellylee Evan released her debut album “Fight or Flight?”\, nominated in for a 2007 Juno award. It was immediately apparent that here was a vocalist with the gorgeous voice and musical intelligence possessed by only an elite group of singer/songwriters. Equally comfortable with jazz\, soul\, pop\, and hip-hop\, Kellylee has the ability to deliver each live performance with a visceral energy that brings spellbound audiences to their feet. \nAfter years of grueling international touring\, 6 albums and multiple awards\, all the while homeschooling her three children\, Kellylee suffered a life altering lightning strike in 2013\, and subsequent concussions in 2015 and 2022. Since 2017 Kellylee has focused on her recovery\, cautiously returning to making and sharing her music\, as well as speaking publicly about her personal journey and sharing her inspiring message of self-care and finding one’s own superpowers. \nHer remarkable talent has since been matched by her positive resilience\, producing 3 more recordings and continuing to bring joy through live performance. Kellylee enjoys performing for audiences of all ages. MERA extends a special welcome to families and youth to join us for this concert. \nCLICK HERE for more information and video about Kellylee Evans \nTickets are available at TicketsPlease.ca \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age. \nRegular – 31 years & older: $40 plus fees\nDiscount Single – 30 years & under: $20 plus fees\nDiscount Pair – 30 years & under with guest of any age (2 tickets): $40 plus fees \nFunding support provided by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: The Quilter's Guild
DESCRIPTION:After years of mutual admiration\, Mike T. Kerr and Lotus Wight have stitched together a musical union\, an artfully arranged patchwork of instruments and influences\, each explored down to its deep authentic roots. A shared passion for music history and rare recordings provides common musical ground for these unique and masterful musicians. \nLotus Wight\, a.k.a. Sam Allison\, plays music in the key of Folk\, Blues and Ragtime. Audiences are captivated by his seamless movement from banjo to jaw-harp to guitar and his own invention\, the contrabass harmoniphoneum. His original songs\, both heartfelt and entertaining\, sound like they have been plucked from days of old\, and his inimitable style has won him accolades from all over the globe\, including festival performances in the Shetland Islands\, Turkey\, Denmark\, and the Netherlands.\nMike T. Kerr is a wild guitar player and ambitious songwriter who combines the boisterous ragtime of the Reverend Gary Davis\, the country class of Chet Atkins\, and the explosive energy of Django Reinhardt into a fireworks display of musical joy. Always curious to dig up not only a song’s history\, but the shape of the world at the time\, Mike plays passionately and openly while interpreting the great country blues and jazz players of the past. Mike is in high demand as a soloist\, an accompanist and session guitarist\, touring and recording with such notables as William Prince\, Corin Raymond\, Campbell Woods\, Irish Mythen and many others.\nAs The Quilter’s Guild\, these two mighty musicians will join forces at MERA to present an unforgettable afternoon of strumming\, picking\, singing\, entertaining and educating.\nCLICK HERE for more information and video about the Quilter’s Guild \nTickets are available at TicketsPlease.ca \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age. \nRegular – 31 years & older: $35 plus fees\nDiscount Single – 30 years & under: $15 plus fees\nDiscount Pair – 30 years & under with guest of any age (2 tickets): $30 plus fees \nFunding support provided by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Maggie's Wake

Although recently formed\, this is a seasoned quartet with strong original compositions that have the story lines\, vocal harmonies and Celtic arrangements rooted in a traditional folk idiom\, but played with a contemporary freedom that hints at jazz\, Americana\, and classic country. SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Seventh Town
DESCRIPTION:Seventh Town is a four-piece Celtic folk band from Prince Edward County. Seventh Town blends traditional Irish\, Scottish and Canadian songs and fiddle tunes with fiddle\, guitar\, double bass and Irish whistles to back up four-part vocal harmonies. The group draws its musical inspiration from traditional and contemporary folk songs\, reels\, and jigs from Irish\, Scottish\, and Canadian traditions.\nMartin Smit\, Trisha Elliott\, Meghan Balogh and Fraser Hardman have been playing together for more than a decade. That musical chemistry shines through in Seventh Town’s thoughtful and harmony-driven arrangements of old and new Celtic and folk pieces.\n\n“You can’t understand the talent and hard work that has gone into creating a group like Seventh Town without seeing them live. Their respect for the traditional music they perform really comes through then. As does their uncompromising musicianship\, creative approach and flair for showmanship. It’s clear they love what they do – and it’s so much fun to watch.”\n– Randy Stewart\, Shelter Valley Concert Series\n\nTickets are $30 plus fees available at TICKETS PLEASE

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Nathan Sloniowski
DESCRIPTION:with Vicki Brittle\, Barry Buse and Bill Serson\n  \nIt was not hard to see why Nathan Sloniowski and musical friends sold out their album release show at Folkus last February. Titled “The Lost Love Letter to a Small Town”\, this concept album is a quality work on every level. With Nathan’s honey-bourbon voice\, backed by a most impressive collection of studio talent\, the album is a delightful musical carousel that makes stops at small town cafés\, dance halls\, tree-lined fields and limestone quarries\, offering lyrical nods to many of his singer-songwriter heroes. The result is a nine-song tribute to what Nathan calls “the collage of open-hearted dreamers who grew me up in the 1970s artistic lair of Elora\, Ontario\, and the many more I’ve met in other small towns along the way.” \n‘Folkus’ chair and artistic director Sandy Irvin succinctly describes Nathan as “a musical activist and pot-stirrer\, ever-busy around town\, known recently for sparking up the Almonte Song Circle as well as his work with The Ragged Flowers\, …. also a co-founder of PorchFest de Mississippi Mills and is one of the original founders of Folkus.” \nWhen Nathan offered to bring his “pretty hot band” comprised of homegrown hand-picked players Vicki Brittle on vocals\, Barry Buse on guitar and bass and Bill Serson on drums\, there was only one possible answer. See you September 8! \nFor more information about Nathan Sloniowski CLICK HERE \nFor musical clips from “The Lost Love Letter to a Small Town” CLICK HERE \nTickets are $30.00 plus fees\, available at TICKETS PLEASE until 11:59pm September 7\, 2024 \nDepending on availability\, tickets will be available at the door for $35.00 \nThe MERA Schoolhouse is located at 974 Dalhousie Concession 9A\, McDonald’s Corners.
