SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Kellylee Evans
DESCRIPTION:It has been almost 20 years since Kellylee Evan released her debut album “Fight or Flight?”\, nominated in for a 2007 Juno award. It was immediately apparent that here was a vocalist with the gorgeous voice and musical intelligence possessed by only an elite group of singer/songwriters. Equally comfortable with jazz\, soul\, pop\, and hip-hop\, Kellylee has the ability to deliver each live performance with a visceral energy that brings spellbound audiences to their feet. \nAfter years of grueling international touring\, 6 albums and multiple awards\, all the while homeschooling her three children\, Kellylee suffered a life altering lightning strike in 2013\, and subsequent concussions in 2015 and 2022. Since 2017 Kellylee has focused on her recovery\, cautiously returning to making and sharing her music\, as well as speaking publicly about her personal journey and sharing her inspiring message of self-care and finding one’s own superpowers. \nHer remarkable talent has since been matched by her positive resilience\, producing 3 more recordings and continuing to bring joy through live performance. Kellylee enjoys performing for audiences of all ages. MERA extends a special welcome to families and youth to join us for this concert. \nCLICK HERE for more information and video about Kellylee Evans \nTickets are available at TicketsPlease.ca \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age. \nRegular – 31 years & older: $40 plus fees\nDiscount Single – 30 years & under: $20 plus fees\nDiscount Pair – 30 years & under with guest of any age (2 tickets): $40 plus fees \nFunding support provided by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Terra Spenser
DESCRIPTION:A very first impression of Terra Spencer’s music is one of comfortable melody sung confidently\, accompanied by deft fingerstyle guitar or piano. But after the first verse you are wishing you paid more attention. There are stories unfolding here in this music. Terra has been playing instruments from a young age\, but her music career is barely a decade old. This follows a stint as a small town funeral director\, an occupation with a unique window into a community of stories. Wherever her stories come from\, the styles and subjects of Terra’s compositions cast a surprisingly wide net\, quirky\, poignant\, observant\, fascinating. On stage Terra brings easy gentle humor and spontaneous conversation that connects her music together to create a thoughtful\, intimate show. \nThe caliber of Terra’s songwriting has attracted collaborations with such musicians as David Gunning\, David Francey and Ben Caplan. Each of Terra’s 4 strong albums have added to her growing reputation as a quality musician and songwriter. Terra’s latest album ‘Sunset’ was named the 2024 Penguin Eggs Roots Music Canada Critics’ Choice Album of the Year (alongside Julian Taylor’s ‘Pathways’) and Music Nova Scotia Folk/Roots Recording of the Year\, and garnered her ECMA and Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Solo Artist and English Songwriter of the Year. You may not have heard Terra Spencer before\, but once you do\, you will not soon forget her music. \nCLICK HERE for more information and video about Terra Spencer \nTickets are available at TicketsPlease.ca \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age. \nRegular – 31 years & older: $30 plus fees\nDiscount Single – 30 years & under: $10 plus fees\nDiscount Pair – 30 years & under with guest of any age (2 tickets): $20 plus fees \nFunding support provided by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: The Donné Roberts Band
DESCRIPTION:Born in Madagascar\, raised and educated in Moscow\, Donné Roberts was already a musician fluent in Malagasy\, Russian\, French and English by the time he arrived in Canada in 1999. His performances and recordings with the Juno winning African Guitar Summit from 2004 to 2007 gained him wider exposure and appreciation. As part of the Okavango African Orchestra\, Donné was again awarded a Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year in 2017. All the while\, Donné has been a busy musician\, touring with his own band\, and releasing multiple albums including Juno nominated “OYA!” in 2022. His growing success caught the attention of CBC Radio\, who commissioned him to compose the theme music for their popular morning Sunday morning show Fresh Air. \nDonné is an active collaborator with notables such as the Sultans of String\, Amanda Martinez and Toronto-based Japanese singer-songwriter Kiiola\, with whom he performs in the aptly named duo Baobab Cherry. Although much of Donné’s own music is written and sung in his first language\, Malagasy\, his versatility and natural ability to synthesize from his wide experience allow him to create music that is always dynamic\, accessible and fun. Prepare yourself for a lively afternoon with Donné and his band consisting of guitar\, keyboard\, bass\, percussion and multiple vocals. \nMuch like Madagascar music is infused with African\, Austronesian\, Arabic and European influences\, Donné Roberts’ music is a delicious mélange of international sonic flavours. Eric Alper\, March 4th\, 2022 – Cashbox Magazine Canada \nAbove everything else\, Roberts aims for his musical concoctions to be a source of hope and joy. Darryl Sterdan\, March 2\, 2022 – Tinnitist \nCLICK HERE for more information and video about Donné Roberts \nTickets are available at TicketsPlease.ca \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age. \nRegular – 31 years & older: $35 plus fees\nDiscount Single – 30 years & under: $15 plus fees\nDiscount Pair – 30 years & under with guest of any age (2 tickets): $30 plus fees \nFunding support provided by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Homewood Duo
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Patrick Goodwin and pianist Reese Barkhuizen have been performing together for years but have only recently formalized their collaboration as the “Homewood Duo”. For their performance at MERA they will present “Fall Colours”\, a classical “playlist” for the autumn season. The programme contrasts the spirited energy of Beethoven with the colourful brushstrokes of Debussy\, exploring the rustic hues\, bucolic comforts\, and quiet resolutions of the fall. The programme also features solo works for both instruments\, including Mendelssohn’s beloved Rondo Capriccioso for piano and a nostalgic work for solo violin by South African composer Hendrik Hofmeyr. \nViolinist Patrick Goodwin previously held the position of concertmaster with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra\, frequently leading the orchestra in partnership with Cape Town Opera and Cape Town City Ballet. Now based in Toronto\, Patrick regularly performs with various orchestras including the Canadian Opera Company\, the Orchestra of the National Ballet of Canada\, and the newly formed Canadian Chamber Orchestra. As a passionate chamber musician\, Patrick has appeared in concert throughout South Africa and collaborates regularly with various groups in and around Toronto\, including performances with his duo and life partner\, pianist Reese Barkhuizen. \nOriginating from South Africa\, Reese Barkhuizen enjoys critical acclaim as a concert pianist\, collaborative artist\, and teacher. As well as competing in several international piano competitions\, his performances and studies have taken him from Cape Town to Finland\, China\, Estonia\, the USA\, and the United Kingdom. As an educator\, Reese has taught students at some of South Africa’s most prestigious institutions. He is currently the director of music at Sunnybrook School in Toronto where he continues to inspire and motivate students while maintaining a busy performance schedule. \nTickets are available at Tickets Please \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age.

SUMMARY:Music at MERA - Lynne Hanson and Blair Michael Hogan
DESCRIPTION:“Canada’s Queen of Americana” last graced the MERA stage late in 2021 and her return is long overdue. Over the last 20 years Lynne Hanson has built a solid reputation for live performance and produced 10 (and counting) albums of critically acclaimed original music including her Canadian Folk Music Award winning collaboration with Lynn Miles “Heartbreak Song for the Radio”. Lynne describes her musician’s persona as a “heartbreak poet” whose compositions include “a little blues\, a little country\, and a little folk with a whole lot of grit and capital T truth in the lyrics”. To this list we should add her great ear for intriguing melody and story lines. This folk roots blend has been labeled “Americana” and is certainly a term Lynne does not dismiss. However\, her extensive catalog offers many wonderful pieces that fall outside of that genre musically while retaining Lynne’s unmistakable rich vocals and mature lyrical standards. Joining Lynne will be Blair Michael Hogan\, her long time collaborator and one of the most gifted and versatile guitarists on the scene today. This pair will bring us a selection of material that includes some of Lynn’s newest work. Honest\, finely crafted compositions and impeccable performance. Prepare to be captivated. \nFor more information plus video Click Here \nTickets are available at Tickets Please \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age. \nRegular – 31 years & older: $35 plus fees\nDiscount Single – 30 years & under: $15 plus fees\nDiscount Pair – 30 years & under with guest of any age (2 tickets): $30 plus fees \nBuy Now \nFunding assistance provided by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario \n\n

SUMMARY:Music at MERA - Tulua
DESCRIPTION:Tulua is a group we have been interested in for well over a year now\, so when this opportunity popped up\, we grabbed it. One of the most exciting young bands in contemporary Irish traditional music\, Tulua combine a fresh\, energetic sound with deep roots in the tradition. Meaning ‘tribe of many paths’ Tulua hail from the southeast of Ireland. Drawing inspiration from local songs\, tunes and sessions around Ireland\, their music blends strong instrumental playing with rich arrangements and storytelling through song. They have played alongside many of the biggest names in Irish music including Beoga\, Dervish\, De Dannan\, Alantic Arc\, Fergal Scahill and Cormac Begley. \nSince the bands formation in 2019\, Tulua have toured extensively worldwide. In their previous visits to North America Tulua have played the Stan Rogers Festival Canada\, the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival and were official showcase artists at the 2025 Folk Alliance International Conference in Montreal. Their tour of Canada this fall will be a month long\, coast to coast excursion with 22 dates in 7 provinces. There is a funny story about how it is that Tulua will be playing at MERA. Come to the show and find out how lucky we are. \nFor more information and video Click Here \nTickets available at Tickets Please HERE \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age.
