SUMMARY:Heritage Weavers
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Place: Dean Hall \nContact Person: Lise Loader \nThis collective has expanded significantly from a core group over the last few years. \nThe weavers gather to plan and work on projects and are available to share ideas\, advice and enthusiasm with each other and newer weavers. It’s an apprentice-like learn-as-you-go environment suited to those who have taken an introduction to weaving weekend workshop at a guild. \nWe have 7 looms of various sizes and styles at MERA. Some of these looms are set up with extra-long warps which become cooperative projects that various members work on when they can. \nAs with all groups at the Schoolhouse\, you must have a MERA membership to become a regular member of the MERA Heritage Weavers.

SUMMARY:MERA's Needle Pushers
DESCRIPTION:  \nMeeting Space: MERA Room \nContact Person: Bonnie McQuatt \nWe welcome anyone who might have new techniques or designs to share or perhaps just has a desire to try something new. \nMost of the fun of quilting is being with the people we quilt with. Newcomers learn by doing. If you would like to try quilting with us we will share our supplies with you until you figure out if quilting is your thing or not. The requirements for quilting are minimal. Those who have a portable sewing machine\, rotary cutter and mat will bring that equipment when we are starting a quilt and we work together cutting out the pattern and assembling the quilt. Once the hand quilting begins each person needs their own thimble\, scissors and quilting needles. \n

SUMMARY:Meet the Artist at MERA: A Generational Show
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Artists at MERA April 4th \nA Generational Show \nA Generational Show is an art exhibit that features the work of a family of artists: Deb Shea\, Ida Bova\, Lochlann Moodie and Zoe-Rose Metcalfe. Join us at 974 Dalhousie Concession 9A in McDonalds Corners for MERA’s April art exhibition. We invite you to the show opening at our Meet the Artist Event in Dean Hall\, Saturday April 4th from 12 pm to 2 pm. \nWhat does it mean to spread whatever knowledge we hold and hand that knowledge down to the younger generations? Art in all its forms creates a satisfaction\, not so much in the proud finished piece\, but within our own minds as it moves from the world outside to the inside world. Art is the place to turn to when the world lays angry at our feet. Art is a waiting place where we can always pick up a brush loaded with colour and transform a blank canvas into something else. It is this peace of mind to hand down. A very special place to retreat to. A foothold for generations to balance on. \nDeb Shea: Is a Lanark Highlands artist who works in watercolour and acrylics. As both an artist and grandmother\, Deb understands the beauty of legacy — how creativity moves through generations like a quiet inheritance. Through her art\, Deb recreates the emotional connection she has had with the art work. \nIda Bova: Ida is a mostly self-taught artist from Almonte\, Ontario. For as long as she can remember she has always taken pleasure in creating drawings\, paintings\, sculptures\, and many other forms of her own expression. Ida takes great joy in discovering the “personality” of the medium she is using\, and oscillates between a variety of mediums\, regularly. When she isn’t painting\, or creating\, Ida is running a business\, parenting her daughter\, and finding ways to play in the world around her. \nLochlann Moodie: Lochlann is a thirteen-year-old artist exploring expression through\nacrylic painting. Also a dedicated pianist\, he brings a natural sense of rhythm and movement to his paintings. Growing up within three generations of artists\, creativity has always been part of his everyday world. He often uses Bob Ross tutorials as a jumping point or paints alongside his Nana. He is now emerging into the use of colours to capture parts of the Canadian landscape. \nZoe-Rose Metcalfe: Zoe-Rose would describe herself as a “real kid artist”. Since she was old enough to hold something in her hands\, and use it with intention\, she has created beautiful art. She often passes her time drawing doodles in her journals\, or colouring creations that tell very imaginative stories. Often\, when the mood strikes\, she will sit with her Mother and paint or create in parallel to Mom. For Zoe\, art has become a meaningful way to find regulation in a very noisy world\, and is something she does with a zest and passion that transcends through her artwork. \nYou can view the exhibit for the entire month April. In fact\, why not swing by during MERA’s Saturday Café from 10 am to 2 pm? To arrange to see the exhibition at other times\, please contact Tim Booth at timothybooth9@gmail.com. \nMERA (McDonalds Corners/Elphin Recreation & Arts) is committed to facilitating and promoting activities and programs for all ages which help bring this rural community together and to promoting awareness and understanding of the arts and well-being. SUMMARY:Music at MERA: The Quilter's Guild
DESCRIPTION:After years of mutual admiration\, Mike T. Kerr and Lotus Wight have stitched together a musical union\, an artfully arranged patchwork of instruments and influences\, each explored down to its deep authentic roots. A shared passion for music history and rare recordings provides common musical ground for these unique and masterful musicians. \nLotus Wight\, a.k.a. Sam Allison\, plays music in the key of Folk\, Blues and Ragtime. Audiences are captivated by his seamless movement from banjo to jaw-harp to guitar and his own invention\, the contrabass harmoniphoneum. His original songs\, both heartfelt and entertaining\, sound like they have been plucked from days of old\, and his inimitable style has won him accolades from all over the globe\, including festival performances in the Shetland Islands\, Turkey\, Denmark\, and the Netherlands.\nMike T. Kerr is a wild guitar player and ambitious songwriter who combines the boisterous ragtime of the Reverend Gary Davis\, the country class of Chet Atkins\, and the explosive energy of Django Reinhardt into a fireworks display of musical joy. Always curious to dig up not only a song’s history\, but the shape of the world at the time\, Mike plays passionately and openly while interpreting the great country blues and jazz players of the past. Mike is in high demand as a soloist\, an accompanist and session guitarist\, touring and recording with such notables as William Prince\, Corin Raymond\, Campbell Woods\, Irish Mythen and many others.\nAs The Quilter’s Guild\, these two mighty musicians will join forces at MERA to present an unforgettable afternoon of strumming\, picking\, singing\, entertaining and educating.\nCLICK HERE for more information and video about the Quilter’s Guild \nTickets are available at TicketsPlease.ca \nThanks to the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council we are able to offer a $20 discount to those 30 years and under\, and if they wish\, an additional $20 discount for their “guest” of any age. \nRegular – 31 years & older: $35 plus fees\nDiscount Single – 30 years & under: $15 plus fees\nDiscount Pair – 30 years & under with guest of any age (2 tickets): $30 plus fees \nFunding support provided by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario

SUMMARY:Recorder Consort
DESCRIPTION:The MERA Recorder Consort is an ongoing\, flexible group of players. We meet regularly\, playing intermediate level music in 2-5 parts\, soprano\, alto\, tenor and bass. We play for our own enjoyment\, and we sometimes play for a MERA event such as the Wassail. \nIf you already read music and play the recorder\, we would love you to join this group of enthusiastic amateur players\, with teacher Helen Mogford providing guidance and music. We have a 75 minute class most Fridays.
