SUMMARY:Jeffery Straker - The Great Big Sky Tour
DESCRIPTION:Jeffery Straker grew up listening to country music on his parents Saskatchewan grain farm while at the same time studying classical music\, going on to receive his licentiate diploma in piano performance from Trinity College\, London when he was only 19. Eventually\, the work of fellow Saskatchewan native Joni Mitchell prompted him to begin writing his own material. Since 2006 Jeffery has recorded 10 albums while touring extensively in Canada\, Europe\, Latin America and Japan. A veteran of the stage and screen\, he trained at the Royal National Theatre in the UK. \nThe running time is approximately 55 minutes\, with no interval. Recommended for ages 14+. SUMMARY:Meet the Artist: Suzette MacSkimming
DESCRIPTION:Soul Search: abstract expressions by Suzette MacSkimming \nYou are invited to join Suzette at the MERA Schoolhouse in McDonald’s Corners (974 Dalhousie Concession 9A) on Saturday May 3rd\, 2pm to 4pm to meet the artist\, view her works and purchase that “must have” piece. \nSoul Search: abstract expressions is an exhibition of new and recent acrylic paintings by Suzette MacSkimming. These works are the latest culmination of a lifelong artistic career\, during which Suzette has explored the endless possibilities of abstract expressionist painting. Working in a tradition that began as an artistic resistance movement\, a desire for new beginnings\, Suzette has evolved her own style of abstraction exploding with vibrant colour and dynamic movement. Her paintings turn the viewer’s imagination loose to run free in a space where inner and outer worlds collide. \nA fine-arts graduate of the University of California at Berkeley\, Suzette studied with many leading west-coast abstract expressionists. After a year travelling in Europe\, she moved to Canada\, studying with Robert Markle and Dennis Burton in Toronto\, and Richard Gorman and Leonard Gherbrandt in Ottawa. \nSuzette’s work has been widely exhibited by galleries\, including Ottawa’s Atrium Gallery at Centrepointe\, Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston\, and successive galleries in Perth\, where she moved in 2002. She has worked in residence at the Contemporary Artists’ Center in North Adams\, Massachusetts\, where she created and exhibited a series of large monoprints. In 2007 fifteen prints from that series were purchased by the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University\, Ottawa\, where they are on permanent display. \nSuzette will also be offering a workshop on Friday May 23rd\, 10:30am to 4pm. $60 for MERA members and $75 for non members. Space is limited. Please register by emailing MERA admin meraschoolhouse@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: James Keelaghan
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary folk songs\, at their very best\, offer an insight into the hardships\, attitudes\, and resolve of characters and events that shape our day-to-day lives. You can dress these songs up in inspired arrangements and intricate instrumentation but\, at their very essence\, the archetypal folk song is all about stories. Stories and people.” Roddy Campbell musician and Penguin Eggs founder.\n\nThis has been James Keelaghan’s guiding star since the beginning of his musical career. From 1987 to the present\, with 10 albums and a Juno and CFMA to his credit\, James has continued to build and perform a body of work that is literate\, relevant and compelling. A mature talent that is truly one of our finest songwriters and seasoned performers. James’s most recent album “Second Hand”\, nominated or a Juno\, proves that his creative instincts are as strong as ever. His generous contributions to the greater contemporary folk scene as a frequent songwriting collaborator and Artistic Director for the Summerfolk Music Festival and (until recently) our own Stewart Park Festival illustrate admirable generosity and commitment to his community.\nJames will be accompanied on bass by David Woodhead\, one of this county’s most experienced\, versatile and well respected musicians whose musical CV reaches back to the 1970’s.\n\nTwo accomplished musicians in an intimate 60 seat hall. SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Nathan Sloniowski
DESCRIPTION:with Vicki Brittle\, Barry Buse and Bill Serson\n  \nIt was not hard to see why Nathan Sloniowski and musical friends sold out their album release show at Folkus last February. Titled “The Lost Love Letter to a Small Town”\, this concept album is a quality work on every level. With Nathan’s honey-bourbon voice\, backed by a most impressive collection of studio talent\, the album is a delightful musical carousel that makes stops at small town cafés\, dance halls\, tree-lined fields and limestone quarries\, offering lyrical nods to many of his singer-songwriter heroes. The result is a nine-song tribute to what Nathan calls “the collage of open-hearted dreamers who grew me up in the 1970s artistic lair of Elora\, Ontario\, and the many more I’ve met in other small towns along the way.” \n‘Folkus’ chair and artistic director Sandy Irvin succinctly describes Nathan as “a musical activist and pot-stirrer\, ever-busy around town\, known recently for sparking up the Almonte Song Circle as well as his work with The Ragged Flowers\, …. also a co-founder of PorchFest de Mississippi Mills and is one of the original founders of Folkus.” \nWhen Nathan offered to bring his “pretty hot band” comprised of homegrown hand-picked players Vicki Brittle on vocals\, Barry Buse on guitar and bass and Bill Serson on drums\, there was only one possible answer. See you September 8! \nFor more information about Nathan Sloniowski CLICK HERE \nFor musical clips from “The Lost Love Letter to a Small Town” CLICK HERE \nTickets are $30.00 plus fees\, available at TICKETS PLEASE until 11:59pm September 7\, 2024 \nDepending on availability\, tickets will be available at the door for $35.00 \nThe MERA Schoolhouse is located at 974 Dalhousie Concession 9A\, McDonald’s Corners.
