MERA ‘Round the World on a Plate Suppers
There are typically 4 Friday evening suppers spaced through the colder months, each with a theme.
The ‘Round the World on a Plate Suppers have become a tradition at MERA since their inception in 2006.
Originally, as the name implies, each menu would be inspired by the cuisine of some interesting country or culture. In recent years the themes have become more varied in the interest of originality.
2019 Around the World on a Dinner Plate Suppers
Friday January 25 - East Indian cuisine
Curry lentil soup, Rogan josh (Lamb Stew),Phool gobi ki ghaji (Cauliflower with onion and tomato), Kheere ka raita (Yoghurt with cucmber and mint), Arros Verde (Green rice), Naan bread and Mango chutney. The recipes are from Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cookery. If you have been to India and have clothing you are welcome to wear it. Indian music will help set the tone. Chefs: Charlie & Sue, Keith & Erica and Steve & Jane.
Friday February 8 - Canadian, Eh!
Come to a feast of pork ribs, baked beans, potatoes and salads, with vegan beans, potatoes and salads. Beer and wine too! Wear Plaid and other comfy Canadian clothes. Chefs Barry, Helen and Friends.
Friday February 22 - Russian Cuisine
Ankaret & Friends will be hosting a "To Russia With Love" evening
Come and join us for a delicious dinner of Borscht soup with pumpernickel bread, Kasha varnishes, Beef Stroganoff, Mushroom perogies and Salads Oliver. Entertainment will follow dessert. We welcome any Cossack dancers!
Friday March 8 - 1850 Family Meal
Come join us for a circa 1850 family meal - a birthday party for the schoolhouse. Trina & Sawyer, PJ, and Lyndal & Michael will serve up a traditional feast of roasted turkey & beef with all the fixings: vegetables, salads, stuffing and gravy! (*vegetarian alternatives will be available). Bring a dessert for the potluck sweets table, and your parlour game "smarts". We're planning an evening of MERA memories and community spirit
The seating capacity is 40 diners and there is rarely an empty seat.
Because of the demand, RESERVATIONS and PAYMENT MUST BE MADE IN ADVANCE through the administrator. To reserve your seats contact email@example.com or leave a message at 613-278-0388. The cost is $15 per person and to pay in advance you can mail or drop off a cheque, or better yet, pay electronically by e-transfer.

A different volunteer group organizes and prepares each meal. They are reimbursed only for their out of pocket expenses so this is a substantial and consistent fund raising event for MERA. Diners are encouraged to bring a dessert so there is usually an enticing potluck selection of treats to finish off the meal along with tea and coffee.
In 2017 the culinary themes all involved places in Canada in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary. For 2018 the theme was ‘Round MERA on a Dinner Plate. The four organizing groups were the MERA Arts Circle, the MERA Recorder Ensemble, the MERA Book Club and the MERA Potters.
